Projects / Leonardo Helicopters: Building 188

Building 188 is a live production and manufacturing facility producing high quality precision parts for commercial helicopters. The project overall was to re-roof the entire building and upgrade all high level building services, including converting the heating systems from oil to natural gas fired warm air heaters.

No production time was lost throughout this very challenging project.
Watertite were the first sub-contractor in the programme, installing a new 150mm diameter steel high level internal gas main through Building 110 and entering 188 across a high level pipe bridge and then splitting in to a 100mm diameter steel ring main around the entire 188 building.
Two live “Hot Tappings” were installed on the existing site gas network, again avoiding any disruption to other areas of the factory.

Later in the project, once the 37 scaffold zones were in place, we returned to fulfil the rest of the works installing new gas fired warm air heaters, de-stratification fans, fresh air ventilation fans and extract fans, along with a new BMS control system linked to the existing site-wide BMS.
Finally, the redundant oil ring main and 2 external 10,000 litre steel shell oil tanks were degassed and removed from site.

Leonardo Helicopters: Building 188

Main Contractor: Morgan Sindall

Mechanical Objectives: Install new high level building services, convert heating from oil to gas and install new BMS controls.

Solution: The works were very carefully planned and programmed closely with Morgan Sindall’s Project Manager Richard Thorne, whom in turn liaised with the Leonardo team.

Watertite were instrumental early in the project and delivered two talks to the Leonardo workforce (with Leonardo’s H&S Adviser) to inform them of exactly what they could expect to see, and how this would not need to impact upon their day to day activities.
